Whether you need to bring home a bottle of the “good stuff” for a party or want to pick up the perfect one for your boss, it’s important to know which kind of wine would be best suited for the occasion. With hundreds of red wine reviews available, one’s always confused about which one to choose. Let’s take a plunge into this red wine review that’ll surely help you make the right choice and make your evening perfect.
Red wines can be made from a vast variety of grapes. Depending on the tannin content, the resulting wine could be dark red, ruby red, maroon, almost black, garnet etc. Red wine’s particular red color would depend on the type of grape used and the duration of time the skins are in contact with the juice during fermentation. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel are some of the most popular red wines in today’s worldwide market.
Cabernet Sauvignon
French wines have always been a hot favorite amongst wine fans. The Cabernet Sauvignon casually referred to as the “big daddy” of red wines, has always scored highly on red wine reviews around the world. Originally produced in the Bordeaux region of France, it is also produced in California and is counted amongst the finest red wines in Australia and Chile. It is often blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Ranging from medium-bodied to full-bodied Sauvignon is more potent than other red wines. Rich in flavor it can be well paired with red meats, strong-flavored cheese and dark chocolates. Of all red wines it is the preferred choice for keeping cardiovascular problems at bay.
Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a delicate and lighter bodied red wine. Unlike Sauvignon, Pinot Noir has a very fruity flavor (cherry, strawberry, plum, tea-leaf), and goes well with salmon, pork, ham and poultry.
Merlot
If you’re new to wine drinking, Merlot would be a good choice. Sweeter than Sauvignon, the Merlot is again a Bordeaux specialty. Medium to dark red in color, cherry and herbal flavors are typical to this red wine.
Zinfandel
Native to California, the zesty berry flavor of this wine makes it an apt combination with grilled and barbecued meats.
Shiraz
A wine with a rich flavor and texture, Shiraz complements most cuisines.
If you’re well versed with the different types of red wines available, you can be rest assured that you would in all probability be able to pick up an appropriate one. However, the best way to decide would be to try different types of red wines and then see which one whets your palette the most.
